When do we test AFP?

1. For dog health checkup

2. When a lump is found in the liver

3. When an increase in the liver number of unknown causes is            observed
* If you are diagnosed with ECPKA / CRP kit #31, you will get more accurate results.

What is alpha-fetoprotein (AFP)?

Alpha-fetoprotein is a protein produced by the liver of the fetus. It is mainly produced during birth and decreases after birth. But after becoming an adult In pathological conditions such as liver damage or liver cancer, levels of alpha-fetoprotein may increase again. In humans, there have been reports of increased concentrations in testicular cancer and ovarian cancer in addition to liver cancer, but many studies have not been reported in veterinary medicine. Alpha-fetoprotein is used to monitor the therapeutic effect of liver cancer and to monitor cancer recurrence.

How accurate is the alpha-fetoprotein test?

For serum alpha-fetoprotein test in humans, the sensitivity surveyed in Korea was 40-60% and the specificity was reported as 96-99%.  It is similarly reported in foreign countries with a sensitivity of 39-64% and a specificity of 76-91%.  Therefore, it is not recommended to use the alpha-fetoprotein test alone as a cancer screening test.

Summarizing the characteristics of the AFP test in one word, not all hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs) have elevated AFP levels. However, if the AFP is high, it is very likely that it is hepatocellular (HCC).
